48 feared killed in US missile attacks
Eight Pakistanis die as missile hits Miranshah; 40 killed in Khost;
two UN officials hurt in Kabul; UN office ransacked in Jalalabad

ISLAMABAD: At least forty, 40, activists of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen of Kashmir were killed in US missile strikes on Afghanistan, group spokesman Allah Wassaya said here on Friday. "We fear that we might have lost our 40 comrades due to the evil acts of Americans," Wassaya told AFP in Islamabad. Eight Pakistanis were also killed when an astrayed missile hit Miranshah, raising the death toll at both the places to 48.

Six bodies have already arrived in Pakistan in ambulances from Afghanistan, he said and added that two training camps of the group in the eastern Khost region of Afghanistan were destroyed in the US attacks.

According to Afghan Islamic Press (AIP), a total of 28 bodies have been, so far, removed from the debris of suspected terrorist bases. The agency said that 60 missiles had hit the complex of six camps in Khost near the border with Pakistan that were allegedly run by Saudi national Osama Bin Laden to train Islamic guerrillas from all over the world, for waging a Jihad against the US and Israel.

The camps, run for Kashmiri guerrillas belonging to the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen group and Arab guerrillas of Abou Jandal, were destroyed completely, according to the Afghan news agency. Among the dead were six Arabs and eight Pakistanis. Forty guerrillas were wounded in the attack, it said.

News Desk adds:At least eight Pakistanis were killed and 22 injured, two of them seriously, when a US cruise missile hit Pak-Afghan border near Miranshah. Three of them were from Punjab while two hailed from NWFP. A mosque was also damaged in the attack. Bodies of six Pakistanis have been sent to Rawalpindi.

Meanwhile, according to a member of Balochistan Cabinet, a cruise missile also fell in a non-residential area in Bismya of Kharan Tehsil in Balochistan. The missile did not explode but created panic Ismail Khan writes from Khost: At least 16 people have been killed, five among them Pakistanis, in a Tomahawk cruise missile attack, launched by US Navy ships, based in the Arabian Sea.

"There was a big hissing sound, piercing through. Then there was a big explosion, followed by four more in quick succession. The first explosion occurred at 10.25 pm Afghan time. "I was shocked and spell bound," said Sher Muhammad, a Khostwal, presently guarding the Taleban's main border-post with Pakistan. In what looked like a high-tech war, security officials confirmed to The News that the Americans did jam the digital telephone exchange at Miranshah and wireless radio system for 18 hours -- from 3 pm on Thursday to about 9 am on Friday to cut off possible communication between the targets.

Earlier in Jalalabad, thousands ransacked a United Nations office to vent their anger over US air strikes against targets in Sudan and Afghanistan, Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) reported. The demonstrators stormed the UN office, smashing window-panes and furniture, AIP said quoting Maulvi Sadr-e-Azam, Deputy Governor of Nangahar province, of which Jalalabad is the capital.

Azam said Taleban security personnel rescued the UN staff. Some UN staffers were injured as rioters hurled stones at the building, the agency said. Similar protests against the strikes were reported from Kabul, Ghazni, Kandahar and other towns in Afghanistan.

The protesters in different cities chanted'Death to America' and also raised slogans condemning Iran for its alleged 'interference' in the Taleban-ruled country. In some of the protest rallies they also shouted slogans against Russia. The demonstrators warned the United States against continuing its 'aggression' against Afghanistan and vowed to defend Osama bin Laden. Meanwhile, unidentified gunmen shot at and wounded two UN workers in Kabul on Friday.

The United Nations confirmed two men, an Italian and a French, were shot as they drove in Kabul. The Italian defense ministry identified the Italian as Lt. Col. Carmine Calo. UN officials in Kabul planned to fly both injured men to Pakistan. Foreigners had been advised on Wednesday to leave Afghanistan. UN chief Kofi Annan called on the Taleban to investigate the shooting of two UN workers, his spokesman said. Annan 'strongly condemns' the attack of two members of the UN special mission to Afghanistan, spokesman Fred Eckhard said.

ISLAMABAD: Protesters took out rallies and staged demonstrations throughout the country after Friday prayers against the US military strikes in Afghanistan and Sudan.

Hundreds of protesters took out a rally in Islamabad after Friday prayers and shouted anti-American and pro-Osama Bin Laden slogans. They also burnt the effigy of US President Bill Clinton and the American flag. Protesters started pouring at Aabpara Chowk, carrying banners and placards. The protest rally was arranged by Jamaat-e-Islami (JI).

Speaking at the rally, JI Rawalpindi Amir Maulana Abdul Jalil condemned the US action, saying: "We cannot tolerate the US decision which is against Islamic countries." He alleged that the government had also assisted the US in this act. "We cannot tolerate US agents in the country," he added. He asked the people to boot out all American agents who had assisted the US in this act of aggression, from the country. He said the US president could not stand against a woman, so how could he frighten the Muslims.

Activists of Jamiat-e-Tulba Pakistan also staged a protest demonstration in front of the American Centre. Several non-religious political parties were somewhat muted in their condemnation of the United States and showed interest in protest statements alone. Minorities also expressed angers as a procession was taken out against the US action from Lahore.

At Karachi Company, activists of Sipha-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) held a protest rally and burnt the US flag. The protesters also burnt tyres and chanted slogans against the US strikes. In Rawalpindi, religio-political parties staged protests. Darul Uloom Taleem-ul-Qur'aan represented by the SSP, Jamiat Ahle-Sunnat, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam and Jamiat-e-Tauheed-o-Sunnat staged a protest demonstration at Fawara Chowk, Raja Bazar, which was participated by hundreds of people, mostly party workers and activists.

The demonstrators who gathered at the office of Darul Uloom Taleem-ul-Qur'aan raised slogans against the US while proceeding towards Fawara Chowk. On reaching there, Qari Saeedur Rehman, chief of Jamiat Ahle Sunnat, Qari Abdul Malik, president of Jamiat Ahle Sunnat, and others made emotional speeches.

The speakers warned the US that the Taleban would give a befitting reply if it tried to harm Osama Bin Laden. Similarly, the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) also came down hard on the United States. Chairing a meeting, PPP Rawalpindi chief Haji Chaudhry Mushtaq Hussain said that the attack on Afghanistan and Sudan in residential areas exposed the brutal designs of the United States against the Islamic world. Syed Sajid Ali Mausavi of Tehrik-e-Jaffria Pakistan also criticised the attack on Afghanistan and Sudan.

Our Peshawar correspondent adds: Hundreds of Afghan refugees took to the streets in the outskirts of Peshawar city and blocked the main highway for several hours to protest the US missile attacks. About a dozen people, including a few policemen, received minor injuries when protesters pelted stones and police used batons and tear gas to disperse them. Afghans were also reported to have fired shots on the police, deputed to stop them from heading towards Peshawar, though it was not confirmed by police officials.

Furious Afghans also pelted stones at buildings and passing passenger vehicles. Several groups of Afghan refugees staged demonstrations outside the offices of United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in University Town. Traffic on the main Jamrud Road remained suspended for more than three hours when refugees from two camps -- Kacha Garhi and Nasirbagh -- staged a sit-in soon after Friday congregations to protest the attacks on Khost province and Nangarhar in east of Afghanistan.

Police officials said about 15 protesters were arrested while Afghan refugees put the figure in hundreds. Witnesses said the protesters braved severe lathi-charge and tear gas shelling by police which had to use Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) to disperse the demonstrators. Protesters were chanting slogans against America and its "anti-Islamic" designs, demanding attack on every US citizen in the world. Some of the participants even pelted stones at policemen, rendering injuries to a few, including two officials.

According to an agency's report, one Afghan refugee was killed and several other people were injured on Friday, when police opened fire at a protest of 3,000 Afghan refugees called to denounce the US attacks on Afghanistan. More than 20 policemen were injured during the clash with the refugees.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami and JUI took out separate processions in Peshawar city asking the Pakistan government to come up with a clear policy statement in this regard. Both the parties also held public meetings at Qissa Khwani Bazaar. Rallies were addressed by leaders of the two parties who condemned the missile attacks and vowed to defend Osama Bin Laden even at the cost of their blood. Earlier, the SSP took out a procession from Takhto Jamaat in Peshawar Saddar.

Our Quetta correspondent adds: Thousands of protesters belonging to JUI-F and other religio-political parties thronged the main roads of the city and some other parts of Balochistan after Friday prayers and staged demonstrations. The demonstrators burnt effigies of US President Bill Clinton and warned the American government to be ready to face the same consequences which former USSR had experienced in Afghanistan in the past.

Our Lahore correspondent adds: The Imams of most of the mosques in the city called upon the Ummah to unite against America.
